When watching one of those “Before They Were Famous” shows on TV, it’s amazing the number of film stars whose first appearance on the screen was as an extra. It’s a great way to get a feel for the industry and make a few “extra bucks”!
The other great thing is that it’s not actually that difficult to get work as an extra in film and TV. You will still need to be patient and persistant, but it shouldn’t be too long before you have found yourself a little walk-on role in a movie. How to be a movie extra is mostly about getting on the books of an extras agency, keeping your eyes open for advertisments and keeping your ear to the ground for film shoots near to where you live. However, the pay is not too hot – from around $7 an hour to a little over $50 a day, but still, you’re in Hollywood! And another word of warning – the work can involve a lot of waiting, doing nothing and getting cold! It may not be as glamorous as you first imagined, but it will give you a real taste of the industry.

Being a movie extra is THE EASY way to be in a movie. There are lots of opportunities but it still requires persistence and a bit of luck to get the really good gigs.
Be prepared for low pay and some long days, but it’s nothing for the ability to tell all your friends and family you’re a bona fide Hollywood star!
