How do I get into acting?
Although many people get into acting at an early age, by joining drama groups or going to renowned drama colleges after they finished high school, many people get into acting later in life. So if you’re 50 years old, never been in a play or movie and wondering how do I get into acting, don’t let your age or lack of experience stop you, there’s plenty of time
One of the great things about acting is that it doesn’t matter how tall you are, how heavy you are or how good-looking you are – there will always be parts out there for someone who looks just like you. Movies and plays represent real life, so directors don’t just want to fill their shows with models.
The traditional way would be to join a theater group, or get acting classes and then get an agent, and that route is still applicable today. There are many theater groups worldwide, and they have been the springboard to fame for a large number of the stars you see on stage and screen.
Other ways include contacting local film schools and helping out with student projects. This is also a fantastic way of building a portfolio of film work – and although you won’t get paid, at least it won’t cost you anything and it’s great experience! Also, try to get some TV and film extra work. This will be a good eye-opener to the professional world of film and TV, and it should give you some idea whether it’s the job for you.
It is important for all actors to get an agent once they are ready to go to castings because there are so many castings in progress at any one time, you need someone with good contacts to be able to put you forward for the roles that suit you best, giving you the best chance of getting work. Agents will get you acting auditions for films, TV roles, theater roles, as well as extra work. But remember, most agents will not ask for money up front, they receive a fee once they have placed someone in a role.

Start small, think big!
Join a theater group or contact a local film school. It’s difficult to become an actor without engaging with others. Learn your craft, and once you think you have got to a good enough standard, make sure you get yourself a great agent.
Look online or in trade magazines for agents, or try to get recommendations from other actors. A good agent with all the best contacts is worth their weight in gold!
