Acting audition tips – my successes and failures!

Feb 01, 12 Acting audition tips – my successes and failures!

So it’s been a busy week for me! I had an audition for a small show which I think went really well (I hope!). I learned a new monologue specially for the audition as i wanted to show a darker side to my character. I did a piece from the movie Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) where Ricky Roma takes on his boss. Made me feel like a man! Great movie by the way if you haven’t seen it. The acting is great, a real inspiration for me. So acting audition tips part 1 – choose a great monologue. There is so much choice out there, it is really worth taking the time to find one that works for you.

When I arrived at the audition there were tons of other guys standing around waiting to go in. This can be very daunting for a newbie but after a year on the circuit I have started to get used to it. Just remember that everyone has their own individual qualities that may be right for one director but not another. Acting audition tips number 2 – don’t worry about the competition, think about your own performance and you will have a better chance of success. Tall people will be right for one part, short for another, but it is your own individual presence and talent that will get you a job, not comparing yourself to the other people at the audition.

One thing that I thought didn’t go so well for me was my interaction with the director. You only have a few short minutes to make an impact and I felt afterwards that I was not outgoing enough. It is important to get the balance right and not be too over the top but I felt that maybe I was a little too reserved and could have been more chatty. Acting audition tips number three – get a feel for the personality of the director and try and match them. For example, if they seem very chatty, make sure you respond. Also if they seem quiet and formal, don’t say too much or you risk annoying them!

Anyway, that’s all for this time. I will have another update for you in a few weeks….wish me luck!
